John Crome 1768 - 1821

2021 marks the Bicentenary of the passing of John Crome of Norwich, who was the catalyst and major influence behind the Norwich School of Painters.

Events are being planned and we are currently appealing for members to form a Crome Society.

A Proposal to form a study group to promote interest in the Life and Work of John Crome of Norwich, painter of Norfolk Scenery and major influence behind The Norwich School of Painters.

It has been suggested enthusiasts with an interest in the forthcoming John Crome Bicentenary together with admirers of works by the Norwich School of Painters would like to receive a Newsletter outlining the planned activities. An informal arrangement is envisaged which will remain in place for the next two years, under the provisional title ‘The Crome Society’.

Ideas for articles and topics, possibly developing into study meetings, are now requested. Event dates, even if provisional, can be included. We have already received an overview of Crome’s activities as an etcher for inclusion, and other articles are being composed relating to the life and times of the artist.

The Norwich Castle Museum is planning a major Exhibition for 2021 and the aim is to compliment their activities by promoting the understanding of the work and influence of John Crome and the other Norwich School artists.

When The Crome Society has been established an email will be circulated, and the website under the ‘CROME 200’ section will carry an announcement. A provisional calendar with links to the events will be available. Updates will be issued, so please register your interest now by sending an email or a letter should you wish to receive printed copies.

We look forward to hearing from you to enable us to keep you informed, and also if you have any ideas to further this exciting project.
