CONSTABLE 250

2026 celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Constable, Suffolk’s most famous landscape painter. This Exhibition follows our earlier showing; ‘John Constable R.A. & Family and Friends’ which also featured works by other artists active in Constable’s lifetime.

We are now pleased to present examples of pictures produced by Suffolk artists from around 1825 to the present day. This will briefly explore the development of various styles of painting in Suffolk over the past 200 years, with very recent works demonstrating how Constable still exerts an influence.

Many of the pictures in the present exhibition are on loan from the Harold Day Collection. The term ‘Suffolk School’ was adopted by Harold Day, when he started collecting in the early 1960’s, to describe the group of artists born or working in Suffolk from about 1750 up to the mid 20 th century. Suffolk’s artistic heritage and influence has been considerable over many years and continues to be so.
